I picked up the music for the worship service on Sunday earlier this week. This is the first time I’ll be playing with the contemporary praise+worship band at our new church and a horn line (two trumpets, two trombones) is new for them as well, so it’ll be exciting to see it all come together. The horns will be playing these charts:
- Come, Now Is The Time To Worship (Doerksen, arr. Shipps)
- Open the Eyes of My Heart (Baloche, arr. Shipps)
- My Redeemer Lives (Morgan, arr. Galbraith)
- He Knows My Name (Walker, arr. Shipps)
Everything’s from PraiseCharts; pretty standard writing – nothing extreme, mostly in the key of E, so four #’s for the bass clef players out there. Dan Galbraith tends to be a little more rhythmic in his arrangements, which will take a little more time to tighten up with the group.
My chops are tight – haven’t played a lot over the summer and my range has suffered, but a handful of high B’s is tops for this service, so I should be okay. It’s hard to practice at home when the only time is after the kids go to sleep; have to use a practice mute, which means you don’t really hear yourself coming out of the horn.
For the gearheads out there: for the horn line, I play a 1947 F.A. Reynolds “Professional” straight tenor, .500″ bore with a 7.5″ yellow brass bell. For tenor work in larger ensembles, I use a 1959 Reynolds “Contempora”, .520″ bore with a 8.5″ bronze alloy bell. I also have a ’70 Contempora bass trombone for low-end work.
Looking forward to band practice tomorrow and service on Sunday!
