The New Revised Jerusalem Bible?

njb.jpgI noted a comment on Wikipedia that the next (second) revision of the Jerusalem Bible will revert all the instances of “Yahweh” to “LORD”.

The French text received a third update in 1998. The New Jerusalem Bible is being revised and the new revision will revert Yahweh to LORD, the Catholic Church having changed its mind on this issue.

Of course, this being Wikipedia, there is no supporting citation, so the accuracy of this statement is not readily known.

However, if true and the reports of the upcoming 2009 revision to the HCSB are also correct, this would make the (revised) HCSB as the only major English translation to consistently render the tetragrammaton as “Yahweh” (along with the unfinished World English Bible).

    I recall reading that part of the wiki article a couple of months ago. The usage of Yahweh is my favorite part of the NJB translation and I doubt I would obtain a newer revision that switched to the LORD. Somehow, reading a proper name instead of a title really affects the way my brain processes the OT scriptures. It really makes a difference to me, and is probably why I enjoy reading the NJB OT more than any other translation I’ve found.

    On a side note I’m thinking about ordering Everett Fox’s translation of the Pentateuch called The Five Books of Moses. It looks like he uses YHWH in his text, and follows the hebrew more closely than the modern texts do. Unfortunately the amazon preview of an excerpt of his work only shows his introductory comments and cuts off before Genesis proper begins.

    OTOH, the revised French edition continues to use Yahvé. So who knows what the English one will do.

    Thanks for the update, Doug. I know you have an affection for the Jerusalem Bible, so it’s good to hear some tangible evidence on this latest update, either way.

    Looks like the Catholics have eliminated Yahweh from the New Jerusalem Bible.

    Although the WEB uses GOD, it also uses YAHWEH too.

    Actually http://www.catholic.org/bible/book.php?id=1 does have the name Yahweh, but you have to read it starting with chapter 2. That is because God’s name (the Tetragrameton/YHWH) does not appear in the Hebrew language manuscripts until chapter 2 of Genesis.
